Red Bull Sun Slide at the Punta Cana Kite Fest

Last weekend I was invited to attend the Red Bull Sun Slide and the 4th edition of the annual Punta Cana Kite Fest held in Punta Cana.

For 3 days, the elite of Dominican kiteboarding came together at this incredible spot and we were even lucky enough to have Aaron Hadlow as our international guest superstar.

Since I was the only girl competing in the slider category, I was incredibly happy about the fact that I kicked some serious boys’ butt and managed to make it all the way into the final with Aaron. Guess all that time practicing with Andre Phillip in my backyard has really payed off !!!

A huge thanks goes out to Red Bull Caribbean and to Jon from Kite Club for their amazing effort to make this event happen!

2013 Lord of the Wind

Bryan Lake and Evan Netsch storm the 2013 Lord of the Wind Showdown in Los Barriles Mexico.  Team Cabrinha finds themselves on top of the podium with two 1st place trophies in Freestyle and Slalom Racing from Evan Netsch,  and a 2nd in Course racing didn't stop Lake from taking home the big 2013 THE LORD OF THE WIND check.  The consistent north winds blowing over the warm water make this the perfect destination for one of the sport’s most fun events of the year.

Bryan Lake is the 2012 PKRA World Tour Racing Champion!

 HB-Race-Champ

Lake takes 1St place on the PKRA World Tour Racing Circuit.  From Mexico to Germany, with podium finishes at nearly every stop, Bryan Lake (AKA Bernie) weathered the dramatic Olympic whirlwind, and came out as the 2012 PKRA World Tour Racing Champion.

Born and raised in San Diego, CA Bryan Lake started racing on the water at a young age.  With a solid background racing sailboats, he was recruited by the University of Hawaii’s sailing program.  He says “It was a good move for me!  There was big waves, good wind and we had a kick ass sailing team.  We ripped up the college circuit and won the nationals.”

As fate would have it his UH sailing coaches were kiting and gave him a shot at it one day.  He was instantly hooked.  In 2004 he hit the Gorge games coming in 3rd and graced the cover of Kiteboarding Magazine in 2006.  Highly competitive in nature the laid back surf scene wasn’t doing it for him.  He had the need for speed, and pushing the limits of high performance kite racing was right up his alley.

Bryan went back to his roots in San Diego to race kites, we recently saw him up against the America’s Cup 45’s while they were training.  Bryan’s latest focus is sailing in light winds while assisting Cabrinha’s kite designer Pat Goodman in the development of the latest race gear.  The goal of launching in light wind (as little as 5 knots) to be the first on the water with the fastest kite on the market is now in his grasp.  Next up, Winning the World Championship.

SABA ROCK- BVI Caribbean Trip

HB-Saba This year we hooked up with Saba Rock Island Resort for one of the best trips the team has ever been on. Nestled in the middle of the Caribbean with a ton of island flavor and recognized as one of the top sailing destinations in the world, this beautiful back drop was the perfect place for our annual photo shoot. A place where people walk with a swagger and the pace is slow, you can find one crystal clear, turquoise set up after another in smooth flat water or nice easy waves.

Congratulations Alby!

alby3

We are all super stoked and proud of Alby! Ranked  #3 on the PKRA world tour!

Alberto Rondina just 23 has succeeded, after a total of eight meetings in taking his place on the podium of PKRA World ProKite Tour 2012 behind the winner Youri Zoon and Alex Pastor. A true milestone in his career.

The final event of the season was held at Pointe Magnin in the wonderful New Caledonia, where, despite the lack of cooperation from the local weather conditions, the freestylers were able to show the crowds their stuff in the final two days of the event.
The singles elimination round held on Saturday 24 November saw Alby beat his French ‘cousin’, Arthur Guillebert relatively easily and then go on to face Stefan Speissberger from Austria. It was a tough heat with Speissberger pulling some good tricks from the bag at the beginning, but Alby held his calm and continued to deliver right throughout the heat and moved on to the next round to face the world vice-champion of 2010 & 2011, Alex Pastor. Pastor dominated the heat and Rondina was unable to produce his best. The losers final saw Rondina pitched against his kiwi rival Marc Jacobs. During the heat the wind dropped and after a tense wait due to a blackout of the judges automatic vote counter, Jacobs came out on top leaving Alby in fourth place ahead of the doubles eliminations on the following day.
Rondina’s first and only heat of the day saw him up against the Belgian Cristophe Tack. Even though he started well, Alby was unable to beat Tack who was in great form and the result left Alby 5th on the day but with enough points for him to maintain his third place in the overall rankings.
The battle for first and second place both for the New Caledonian event and the 2012 championship went down to the very final heat between Zoon and Pastor – a real head to head with Zoon just getting the edge and winning by less than half a point in order to stay top of the world.
“It’s been a year of highs and lows, two second places at the beginning of the season and then being out of the rankings in Germany… But in life you need to know how to deal with these things and at the end of the day I’ve made the podium for 2012. A huge thanks to my sponsors, manager, family and friends who’ve all supported me really well this year. I’m going to take a short break now, but I’m then going to get stuck into some serious training for 2013!” commented Alby when asked about his feelings at the end of the 2012 championship.
